Event Attendance Guidelines: Chatham House Rule
What is the Chatham House Rule?
The Chatham House Rule was established by the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in 1927. It provides a framework for conducting discussions that allows for the free exchange of ideas while maintaining confidentiality. Under this rule:
- Participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speakers, nor that of any other participants, may be revealed.
Guidelines for Participants
- Respect Confidentiality: Do not disclose the identity or affiliations of speakers or other attendees when sharing insights or opinions from the discussion.
- Engage Openly: Feel free to express your thoughts and ask questions in an open environment, knowing that your contributions will remain confidential.
- Promote a Safe Space: Ensure that everyone feels comfortable sharing by being respectful and mindful of the diverse perspectives present.
- Limit External Sharing: When discussing themes or topics raised during the event outside of this setting, please do so in a manner that does not attribute comments to individuals or the organization.
Purpose of the Rule
By adhering to the Chatham House Rule, we aim to create a space for candid conversation, encouraging participants to speak freely without the concern of being quoted or identified. This enhances the quality of our discussions and helps build trust among participants.
