Leading practitioners explores practical realities of cross‑border impact investing at Thornhill Academy

Last Thursday (16 April 2026), Thornhill Academy welcomed over 50 participants from the legal, financial services, energy, technology and academic communities for an interactive session, exploring the practical realities of impact investing with a cross-border and comparative lens.
Titled “Impact Investment: Capital, Governance and Global Standards”, the panel discussion featured three experienced experts: Nancy Wang, investment director of Octopus Energy Generation; Vivien Teu, founder of VTLP Impact Circle; and Rhea Yu, senior associate at Thornhill Legal. Together, they shared insights on the latest developments of impact investing across UK, Europe and Asia, and engaged with the audience in a lively and open debate over what impact investing really means in today's global markets.
Here are some key takeaways from the evening:
1. Defining intentionality: The panel clarified that while ESG, sustainable finance, and impact investing overlap, they are distinct. Impact investing is defined by its intentionality—the proactive pursuit of measurable positive change.
2. The financial viability mandate: A core consensus was that impact is only sustainable if it is financially viable. Social and environmental goals must move in tandem with economic performance to ensure longevity.
3. Geopolitical and regulatory friction: While ESG considerations are increasingly mandatory for European institutional investors, the compliance and verification process now significantly slows down decision-making processes from the investment managers’ point of view. In addition, the geopolitical tensions, particularly from the US, create a complex landscape that may temper global adoption speeds.
4. Governance as a catalyst: Robust governance and harmonised global standards are not just administrative hurdles; they are the essential infrastructure required to move impact investment from a niche interest to the global mainstream, and for it to thrive not only in the UK/Europe but in developing countries.
5. The energy transition paradox: Using the energy sector as a primary example, the panel explored how solar and renewables are essential for long-term energy security and cost-reduction. However, the hyper-competitive nature of these markets and the fast-evolving technologies often result in lower rates of return compared to traditional industries, particularly if restrained by too much ESG/impact scrutiny. This underscores the need for investors and developers to look beyond short-term yield and seeking alternative investment and funds from private capitals.
6. From "sticks" to "carrots": Speakers and participants agreed that the ultimate aspiration is for the term "ESG" to eventually become redundant – not because these principles fade, but for them to become fully embedded in business DNA and everyday operations that they are simply the default. The concluding message was clear: the way forward is to move beyond a "tick-box" regulatory exercise driven by "sticks" and instead build an ecosystem that prioritises "carrots", where investors and stakeholders actively reward companies striving for genuine, long-lasting impact.
The event also celebrated the launch of VTLP Impact Circle (https://www.vteu.co/impact-circle/), an international community dedicated to fostering long-term impact and pioneering legal innovation for sustainability across Asia.
VTLP Impact Circle is founded by Vivien Teu, a pioneer and market-leading expert in ESG and impact law practices. She is also the founder of the impact-focused law firm Vivien Teu Law Practice (VTLP) in Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Thornhill Legal, a London-based law firm specialising in China-centric cross-border practice, is a member firm of VTLP Impact Circle.
